Typefaces

Really interested in the typography above, bold and also sliced in layout similar to stealth logo.

A few examples of the 80's hip hop albums I was looking at.

Few ideas for the identity of the Guerilla Gardener. The logo I want to use is something you would find on an 80's hip-hop album, hand drawn out of proportions, bold and has impact.

Guerilla not Antique!

From looking at the letter G. It communicates the idea of gardening but in an old victorian approach, after talking to another student the typography is missing the urban, cityscape, guerilla influence. It would be all good illustrating a spade or city scape and merging it into the letter form but this would make it unbalanced. I have decided to make it more urban - Guerilla is to create the appeal using layout and typography to communicate both the Guerilla aspect and gardening.
Also from the crit last week I have decided to call the event Guerilla Gardening because if I called it something else it would lose more of the message I am trying to communicate. Three of four out the five in last weeks crit didn't know what guerilla gardening was so thats a reason to keep it straight to the point.

Image to Type

Someone found it funny to reverse a letter G to recreate a D&G logo... not good.

Some reason I quite like it in greyscale, maybe because it works as the guerilla gardening usually takes place at night and gives it that edge or looks like a photocopy.

By trying to change the hue, I am creating colours that would appeal more to a younger audience and take it away from the antique look, to give it a more vibrant approach.
Looks like something you would find at the bottom of your sunday dinner round at your grand parents. Victorian style...
Helvetica Oblique base with the montage of illustrations over the top. The first image above looks really good... for a mantle piece, or gardening book. The letterforms say garden but hasn't got the street or urban theme attached to it.

Illustrations CNTD.

More plants illustrated within photoshop/illustrator to make a montage for type.

Image Development

Started off with a botanical illustration, but then builded up the leaves using layers of shading with the pen tool

Not sure if it was the outcome I was after, looks very digital, may as well give it a go now. I would change the hue to fit a young vibrant colour scheme so it doesn't look like some antique artwork.

Botanical Typography

The botanical illustrations above look visually appealing to me, because of the marks and detail within the illustrations. I could either use previous illustrations and edit them with photoshop, make a montage, take photographs but after the after effects work I'd rather produce all the illustrations myself. I may well regret this later as I have mainly used type and image for most of my work, but if I don't try it I know I would regret it and it is also adding something different to my portfolio if I pull it off.

Definition of Botany
Botany, plant science(s), or plant biology is a branch of biology that involves the scientific study of plant life. Botany covers a wide range of scientific disciplines concerned with the study of plants, algae and fungi, including structure, growth, reproduction, metabolism, development, diseases, chemical properties, and evolutionary relationships among taxonomic groups. Botany began with early human efforts to identify edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making it one of the oldest sciences. Today botanists study over 550,000 species of living organisms.

Inspiration how to work floral type to a young audience. This flyer Nick Cobby produced for a club back in Nottingham looks good for the eye but has no relevance to the night.

Something that I've been meaning to do for a while, is to produce some work image as type. From selecting this brief it is an ideal opportunity to start to experiment with type as image and if it doesn't wrk its something to learn from for future reference. I will also try a range of different resolutions, mainly the design work I highlighted in the PPD sessions, areas to produce certain methods and deliverables.

Guerilla Gardening

New Brief: Guerilla Gardening

Paul Brandreth
OUGD203

Rationale

After combing the Hugo boss street art brief and the Botanical typography brief I have decided to set a brief for Guerilla Gardening. From the two briefs they both cover what I as a designer have identified I want to start to develop in my work being, typography and fun, new cultural subjects that are emerging. Typography as image is something that I’ve been meaning to do for a while now and keep avoiding it. Through the PPD sessions I think it would be ideal to start to use contacts within typography to use as a resource and for influence. The event of Guerilla Gardening seems to be a new subject and seems to have the potential to have fun with the subject that is something I would like to start to show in my work.

Statement of Intent

I intend to create an event for Guerilla Gardening within Leeds; this event will be promoted online and also using print. The tone of voice will inform and explain how the Guerilla Gardening works and also within the promotional products also be humorous.
