Opening

Opening Sequence from Paul Brandreth on Vimeo.

I was going to set the program for BBC 3 but after a crit I have decided to use E4 instead as this is better for the target market.

Content

Who's Illustrated who?

I think naming the artists would be better than naming the comics in the title sequence so it doesn't give it away who has made it to the top ten.

10.Kingpin
Frank Miller

9. Dark Phoenix
John Byrne

8. Loki
Esad Ribic

7. Ra's Al Ghul
Cliff Chiang

6. Penguin

5. Galactus
Mitch Breitweiser

4. Lex Luthur
Leinil Francis Yu

3. Doctor Doom
John Byrne

2. Joker
Doug Mahnke

1. Magneto
Scott Williams

Trial

Smoke from Paul Brandreth on Vimeo.

Experiment with the idea of slight movements. Think it works well could do with a background and some smoke. I can use this as a frame in my title sequence when finished.

Logo

Trying the logo on its side at an angle, but it makes the Marvel harder to read rather than 2d.

A few ideas for logo not sure whether to use the Marvel branding or not, Like the idea of applying characteristics to the logo such as Batman and Spiderman.

Idents

1. Layout of storyboard small little clip from that.
2. Short animation for word bang when the telephone rings
3.Light moving up and around buildings leading to the e4 logo
4. Camera moves up persons body and cloud part to the moon where logo appears

Logo

Two ideas for the logo for the show not sure wether or not to have it as Marvels top ten comic villains or, Top ten comic villains.

Title Sequence

A rough idea for a layout for the title sequence. Each box in the comic strip will be slightly animated using the for idents plus smaller clips together. I will use words such as pow, smash ect to link the images together.

Top Ten

Out of the list of ideas I produced, today a day after being given the brief I have decided to make a quick decision for the subject matter as I want to familiarize myself with the subject and start producing ideas ready for next weeks crit. 3 A3 presentation boards.

The subject I want to base the brief on is The Top 10 Comic Book Villains. I have chosen comics as the subject because I want to start producing some hand drawn work for my portfolio and also because I find the typography exciting for the logos of the comics and also the layout and subtitles in the comics.

What do I need to do?
Research
-Comics, Top Ten Villains
-Title sequence
-Names, titles (information to be used)
-Typography

-Start to produce a few ideas
-Logo
-Title
-What 4 comics will be used for the idents?

-Look at Thank-you for not smoking (Pav's recommendation)
-Take a few books out from the libary

Top Ten

Ideas for subject matter of the Top Ten...

-of the top ten programs
-songs
-music artists
-wanted list
-murderers
-riots
-crime
-money
-rich list
-businesses
-comics
-music
-places
-careers
-foods
-hand signs
-photofits
-bizarre modern jobs
-worst jobs in the world
-soundsystems
-to see at a funeral

Storyboards for Dissolve

Dissolve 18

One letter dissolves into the next letter and zooms in so on until the word is spelt Dissolve.

Dissolve 17

Centre of the screen. Movement of an aspirin & water but the composition goes titanic to dissolve & sinks. take the steam out though!

Dissolve 16

Centre of the screen. As if it was dissolving in water then starts to dissolve.

Dissolve 15

Close up of letters dissolving looks interesting nice layout & angle. Camera moves across word.

Dissolve 14

Use type to build up letters break off & disappear from an angle at the bottom left hand side towards the top.

Dissolve 13

Good movement
Centre of the screen?

Dissolve 12

Movement of word interesting maybe zoom out or in, near start?

Dissolve 11

Dissolving from sections top to bottom communicates well. Not alot of movement however.

Dissolve 10

Trying the type from a different angle prefer the type moving the other direction and use type instead of bubbles.

Dissolve 9

Bubbles dissolve type starting at bottom then towards the top until all the type has gone.

Dissolve 8

Love the angle of movement
Letters DISSOLVE made up by smaller type they dissolve until the whole letter has gone, letter by letter.

Dissolve 7

Letters dissolve but up from smaller type using opacity type dissolves letter by letter. Don't like the reflection to much and not too much going off.

Dissolve 6

Letters dissolve built up from smaller lines using opacity until all the letters have gone. I like the reflection but the composition looks static.

Dissolve 5

Letters all connected. First letter dissolves first and carries on to the last using type and lowering the opacity. The composition in the centre of the screen is very static.

Dissolve 4

Letters all connected 1st letter dissolves and carries onto the next letter using smaller lines and lowering the opacity. Static composition.

Dissolve 3

All joined up over lapping letters but the layout has no movement. Static.

Dissolve 2

Using the letter O from DISSOLVE as the focus. Starts to dissolve & passes it onto the other letters next to it.

Dissolve 1

Letter O acts as a weight to pull the other letters down & starts to dissolve. This will give the letters more movement.

Storyboards for Bounce

Bounce 17

Bounce 16

Bounce 15

Spring
Lacks direction where it wants to move to.

Bounce 14

Using letter O & U to represent word.

Bounce 13

Interesting idea using a close up of the counter in the U & I. Think frame 3 & 4 need to link better.

Bounce 12

One letters bounce makes the other letter bounce.

Bounce 11

Repeat a few times eventually stops. I like the camera angle.

Bounce 8

Using different depths, word bounces forward and backwards.

Bounce 7

Satellite Two
Movement better does it reflect the word?

Bounce 6

Satellite
Movement needs adjusting, idea is there.

Bounce 5

Basketball smashes into window
Would be good if my other word was smash. Have got stronger ideas.

Bounce 3

Basketball
Not sure what happens after the ball lands in the letter U. Hard to communicate without sound.

Bounce 2

Space Invaders
Trying close ups instead to save time, works better than Bounce 1

Bounce 1

Space Invaders
Avi video DC blog
type needs to fit in last frame, maybe type is a rock that the circle bounces off.

Storyboards ~ Snap

Story boards for word Snap

Snap 11

Russian Dolls. Not sure if its to much for five seconds. Does it communicate the word snap well?

Snap 10

Simple snap but I don't like the start where it moves from side to side.

Snap 9

Russian doll influence. Maybe letter snaps into next letter to spell word snap.

Snap 8

Nothing happens till last frame then snaps.

Different layouts of word Snap

Few mess around ideas playing with the letterforms for SNAP.

Snap 7

Maybe this could snap in the last second.

Snap 6

As the snap happens between letters it is hard to see where the word snaps. Doesn't help without no sound.

Snap 5

Snap down middle, doesn't represent the word snap to its potential because where the word snaps its between letters, maybe snap through the letters to communicate word better.

Snap 4

Snap Diagonally
Not too much going on. Maybe look at timing this wouldn't be to bad if it snapped in the last second.

Storyboard for Snap 3

Snap 2

Storyboard for Snap 2
Experimenting with the layout of type I don't think it works to well for the word maybe keep it simple

Snap 1

Snap Storyboard 1
Trying to use a 10 frame storyboard to communicate the timing of the word when it eventually snaps at the end after alot of tension on the word before it snaps.
